Kinfolk magazine

We have just discovered this magazine and instantly fell both in love with it. With its clean look, and the simplicity as a way of life. You can read their purposes on the manifesto:

"Kinfolk is a growing community of artists with a shared interest in small gatherings. We recognize that there is something about a table shared by friends, not just a wedding or once-a-year holiday extravaganza, that anchors our relationships and energizes us. We have come together to create Kinfolk as our collaborative way of advocating the natural approach to entertaining that we love.
Every element of Kinfolk—the features, photography, and general aesthetics—are consistent with the way we feel entertaining should be: simple, uncomplicated, and less contrived. Kinfolk is the marriage of our appreciation for art and design and our love for spending time with family and friends."

Kinfolk has in their website a section for video pieces that complete the launched issues and give us a taste of the mood on it. Here are two of them:

Sølve Sundsbø

Sølve Sundsbø (1970, Norway) is one of the biggest stars in fashion photography nowadays. His career was hard to kickstart since he would hear things like: 'I'm not sure I can hire you, I'm not sure what you're doing. What is your style?'"If I've got a style," says Sundsbo, "it's that I've got no style.", he said in an interview to The Independent. His work incorporates X-rays and 3-D scanning, among hi-tech manipulation and hand-painted retouching. Also, "People assume my work has been through a computer but actually I also use a lot of old-fashioned techniques," he says.  While he was in a course at the London College of Printing he received a call from Nick Knight (!), in need of an assistant. He became then highly acclaimed by Tom Ford and others and produced a piece with Alexander McQueen for the Florence Biennale.
His advertising clients include Chanel, Cartier, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, H&M and Yves Saint Laurent. Sundsbø has also created editorials for Italian Vogue, Love Magazine, Visionaire, i-D, among others. He has directed short films for Chanel, Gucci and SHOWstudio. His New York Times piece “14 Actors Acting” won an Emmy Award for New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Arts, Lifestyle and Culture in 2011.

Christian Boltanski

Christian Boltanski (1944), a french born artist. His works focus the theme of death, the uniqueness of each human being, the transience of life and the absence. In opposition to the notion of individual identity, on the ways in which we strive to create and maintain it, the artist explores the loss of it as a collective experience in which we become numbers.

"What drives me as an artist is that I think everyone is unique, yet everyone disappears so quickly"
Christian Boltanski

One of the most recent works from the artist is called "Personnes" was made for Monumenta, in Paris. The artist has filled Paris’s Grand Palais with a 50-tonne mountain of clothes, and the sound of heartbeats. This work evoques the idea of hollow, in a space where life doesn't exist there is only the absence of it and of the persons to whom those clothes might belong.

           watch it here:

The artist keeps on exploring other ideas as the "hand of God" the "luck" and randomness of life and death. You can see more examples of his work on these images:

The work of Christian Boltanski haunts our imagination. It is so cohesive that I think is worth to take a deeper look. In case you feel interested I suggest you to watch a film called "Les Vies Possibles de Christian Boltanski", directed by  Heinz Peter Schwerfel which is a tour throughout his work and interviews with the artist. You can find it here.
