From 1994 to 2002 Matthew Barney has created an epic series of artworks entitled The Cremaster Series. It incorporates sculpture, paintings, drawings, photographs, installations and a series of wonderful movies (Cremaster 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). The concept arose from the male cremaster muscle, which controls testicular contractions in response to external stimuli. The presence or reference to the reproductive organs, either male ou female, is evident throughout the cycle and it's creations, playing with the anatomic potencies of sculpture. The connection between the videos and the sculptural process is an intimate and dramatic one. One of the most outstanding characteristics of this work was the whole creation of plastic materials by the artist.
